Dr. Chen graduated from Shandong Medical University and performed her ophthalmology residency training at Shandong Eye Institute & Hospital in China. She then received her Ph.D. in Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences from University of Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Chen did her postdoctoral training at the Schepens Eye Research Institute, Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School where she became a junior faculty in 2004. She was recruited to University of California at Berkeley in 2007 as an Assistant Professor and Morton D. Sarver Endowed Chair and is now an Associate Professor with tenure. She also holds joint appointments at the Proctor Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology, University of California at San Francisco, and Schepens Eye Research Institute, Mass Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Chen is a recipient of multiple awards, such as Best Paper Award at Schepens Eye Research Institute, Harvard Medical School; Harvard Scholars in Medicine, Alice Adler Fellowship; and Presidential Award of the International Society of Lymphology. Results from her work have been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals including Nature Medicine, PNAS, Cell Research, and IOVS.
